    Department of Mathematics

    About :

“The Department fulfills the goal of producing self dependent, well equipped, knowledgeable students for higher education and research in Mathematics”

The Department of Mathematics was established in 1950.

Prof D. W. Sontakke was the first Head of the Department.

At present there are seven full time teachers.

The department takes all efforts to fulfill the goal of providing all the possible facilities to the students, which encourages them to strengthen their capacity of self preparation and motivate them for their higher studies.

The department has been running undergraduate program since 1950,and post graduate program since 2013. Apart from the regular teaching of the prescribed syllabus of the University of Pune, the department conducts the following curricular,co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for the students.

    Mathematics Exhibition:-
Department has been organizing Mathematics Exhibition for last 21 years for students in 8th and 9th classes. The objectives of the exhibition are:

    a) Students feel that Mathematics is an exciting and challenging subject in which they can use their creative abilities.

    b) Students get an opportunity to discover Mathematics by themselves. In order to achieve these objectives, students of the department are motivated to make the projects containing mathematical games, mathematical models, puzzles, charts containing history of mathematics and mathematicians, paradoxes, problem solving strategies. 8th and 9th standard students of various schools from Ahmednagar city visit the exhibition. Our experience is that such exhibitions are highly appreciated.

    Madhava Mathematics Competition:-
The department has been conducting National Level Madhava Mathematics Competition organized by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, T.I.F.R, Mumbai for Ahmednagar region since 2011. Mr. S.S. Munot has been appointed as the regional coordinator for the competition. Students around 26 colleges of the Ahmednagar region participate for the competition.

    Problem solving corner:-
The department displays ‘Problem of the week’ and ‘Problem of the month’ on the notice board to encourage them in solving problems. It has been bringing a creative atmosphere by discussing the Mathematical problems in their classroom continuously.

    Learning Resources

The Department has its own library containing 821 books, journals, charts, film strips and game cards. It also has a well-equipped Computer Laboratory with 11 Computers, LAN, Internet facility and 2 Printers.

    Teaching Methods and Evaluations

A major aim of teaching Mathematics is to develop among the students the habits of logical and rational thinking. Keeping the above duty and goal in mind, we use different techniques in teaching.

    Personal Counseling to Students

There is a need of potential teacher of Mathematics at all levels, especially for primary and high school levels. We motivate students to come in the field of teaching. We guide the outstanding students and encourage them to do quality research in the institutions like IIT and TIFR. The Department encourages students to join courses like IIT, CDS, UPSC, MPSC, MBA and MCA and give the guide lines for entrance examinations for the same.

Special attention is given to slow learners to develop their thinking ability through close teacher student interaction. Also for advanced learners some stimulating and complicated problems are given for exercise to improve their creative and analytical abilities.

    Mathematics Olympiad

The Department provides guidance for students appearing for Regional Mathematics Olympiad.

    Mathematics Exhibition

Department has been organizing “Mathematic Exhibition” for the last fifteen years. Especially for last two years exhibitions were arranged for students of 8th and 9th classes. Our experience is that this one/two day exhibition is highly appreciated by students along with their parents. These exhibitions contain proofs without word, puzzles, mathematical games, fallacies etc. The main objective of such exhibitions is to create a spirit and excitement of Mathematics among the students.

    Problem Corner

The Department displays ‘problem of the week’ and ‘problem of the month’ on the notice board to encourage them in solving problems. It has been bringing a creative atmosphere by discussing the Mathematical problems in their classrooms continuously.

    Future Plans of the Department

  • Conduct vacation courses for slow and advanced learners.
  • Start a course in Mathematics for Computer science.
  • Procure latest Mathematics books for the Departmental library.
  • Start Coaching for Entrance Examinations for MCA, MBA, M. Sc. In IIT.
